Press Relations Manager
National Center for Transgender Equality
The National Center for Transgender Equality is seeking a talented Press
Relations Manager (PRM) to hold strategy and execution of the
organization’s engagement with news media. The goals of this position
include educating the public about transgender people and elevating the
National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and the National Center for
Transgender Equality Action Fund (the Action Fund) as leaders in the trans
rights movement nationally. This position is part of the Communications
Department and reports to the Communications Director.
About NCTE and NCTE Action Fund
The National Center for Transgender Equality is a strong voice for
transgender people in our nation’s capital. NCTE advocates for policy
change at federal, state, and local levels and works to increase societal
understanding and acceptance of transgender people. NCTE has a serious
commitment to approaching and engaging in its work with an awareness of how
racial and economic justice is intertwined with transgender justice, and a
commitment to ensuring that policymakers and society understand the
connection as well. Launched in 2017, the National Center for Transgender
Equality Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) non-profit advocacy organization fighting
for transgender equality at the local, state, and federal levels, affiliated
with NCTE. The two organizations share staff, including this position.

Job Duties
Collaborate with external public relations agency to develop and execute an
annual press relations plan
Field inquiries from journalists and respond in a timely manner, connecting
them to the appropriate spokesperson as needed
Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and
publications
Pitch creative and newsworthy stories that highlight NCTE's work via local
and national news
Serve as a media spokesperson for the organization, participating in
interviews as needed
Draft and pitch op-eds, ghostwrite bylines, and write speeches for the
executive director and other spokespeople
Draft press releases, factsheets, statements, and talking points for media
Train, advise, and prepare spokespeople for interviews, press conferences,
and other speaking opportunities
Manage and track media interactions, contacts, and campaigns in Cision
database
Track media coverage and produce regular reports to the staff
Qualifications
Press relations experience, including pitching to media, writing press
releases, and maintaining relationships with journalists (3+ years)
Public speaking experience, including media interviews, speeches, and
presentations (3+ years)
Strong writing skills, including the ability to write for multiple audiences
with varied knowledge of transgender issues and/or public policy
Deep understanding of messaging strategy and public narrative
Fluency in Spanish preferred
Bachelor’s degree or other certification in English, Journalism, Public
Relations, or Communications preferred, but not required
Familiarity with the political landscape of transgender issues, including
legislation, policy, and public opinion
Deep and nuanced understanding of racial and economic justice and systems of
interconnected oppressions, including how these issues arise in social
justice movements.
Deep and nuanced understanding of the needs of the transgender community as
well as an understanding of how racism, classism, and other systems of

Salary and Benefits
The Press Relations Manager is a full-time, exempt position and is a union
eligible position.
For this position, the salary range is $60,000-70,000, with the candidate’s
skills and experience determining where they fall in the range. However, for
candidates with more than 10 years of experience, salaries above this range
may be considered.

Location
The Press Relations Manager position is regional and currently remote due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. The PRM can work out of our Washington, D.C. office
(when it is safe to do so per CDC & Washington, D.C. Department of Health
COVID-19 Guidance) or they can work remotely if within 3 to 4 hours' drive or
train ride of D.C. This may include the following areas: New York City,
Philadelphia, Baltimore, and portions of New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. After the pandemic,
occasional travel will be required. If you are not currently based in the
aforementioned region, you must be willing to relocate. NCTE offers
assistance with relocation expenses.
