We’re seeking a Senior Newsroom Analyst to work as part of the Audience team – communicating data-based successes and recommendations to New York Magazine’s editorial team. The ideal candidate is analytical and creative in their data analysis; can effectively communicate results and recommendations to editorial staff; confidently leads collaboration both in and outside of our team, and demonstrates a deep familiarity with New York Magazine.

WHO WE ARE

New York Magazine obsessively chronicles the ideas, people, and cultural events that are forever reshaping our world. The New York brand includes the groundbreaking magazine New York, which is published biweekly in print, and six thriving verticals: Intelligencer, delivering national news and sharp commentary on politics, business, technology, and media; the Cut, covering the conversations that matter most to women today; Vulture, the premier destination for culture news, criticism, and service; the Strategist, dedicated to shopping the internet smartly; Curbed, covering cities and city life; and Grub Street, home to food news and authoritative restaurant criticism.

New York Magazine is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Partner closely with editorial leadership to measure, interpret, and guide content strategy and resourcing decisions.
  • Provide regular analyses and actionable insights to both editorial leadership and the newsroom across verticals, and lead recurring performance reviews that address primary KPIs across multiple audiences, story format and topic analysis, and desk-level performance.
  • Proactively identify trends in content performance and make actionable recommendations for each team or vertical.
  • Collaborate with editors and writers on content planning—especially around tentpole events, coverage packages, and trending topics—using historic performance data.
  • Design, build and support both automated and ad-hoc reports and dashboards across multiple data sources
  • Collect, manipulate and analyze data using multiple tactics and work to ensure data integrity
  • Creatively define key performance metrics with editorial stakeholders that both reflect business goals and advise the team’s long and short-term strategic thinking
  • Communicate about metrics with the team, for example propose or advocate for new metrics (or new definitions), work with an engineer to export the right parameters, etc.
  • Document best practices and write how-to guides to support stakeholders across New York Magazine
  • Maintain strong relationships with the editorial team in order to develop, communicate, and implement strategies for growth
  • Insights span across multiple revenue streams / priorities

WHO YOU ARE

  • You are analytical and detail oriented, with a passion—not just for reporting data—but digging deeper to identify underlying themes around key trends, results and critical outcomes
  • You are very confident with Excel/Google Sheets (e.g. =query() function); you can aggregate data from disparate sources in a consolidated view
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills, and are able to distill actionable insights to non-technical audiences.
  • You’re able to manage multiple tracks of work at once, balancing both short-term and long-term projects simultaneously. You take initiative in starting new projects and seeing them through (individually or through collaboration).
  • Understanding of SEM, SEO, & social media best practices
  • Experience in Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, Parse.ly and insights provided by Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or other social platforms
  • Preferably based in NYC or have the ability to commute in monthly/quarterly for in-office meetings.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced and fluid editorial environment
  • Experience and familiarity with SQL and working with large datasets
  • Have previous experience with a loyalty or community-driven business.
  • Experience training and educating stakeholders in how to use data and tools to drive strategic decisions.

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
