Salon

Salon has been a trusted destination for progressive journalism since 1995. We report on who’s being left behind and who’s getting ahead; we give current events context, provide rigorous analysis, and lead in-depth conversations; we engage and challenge our readers, dismantling conventional wisdom and celebrating innovation with humanity. We’re seeking a full-time reporter to join our news team — someone who can cover Donald Trump’s legal battles and other national news focusing on major legal and political narratives.

The ideal candidate should be an expert on the Trump legal beat with a deep universe of sources and experience mixing rapid-turnaround news assignments and long-range feature reporting in one beat.

This is a full-time, remote-eligible position with a starting salary of $70,000–$75,000. Salon offers a complete benefits package, including unlimited PTO. This position is covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch and write a mix of timely daily news stories and reported features using strong, fast-paced writing skills fit for digital publication, including familiarity with AP Style and a clear, eloquent, reader-friendly voice.
  • Closely monitor U.S. news, trends and the larger political and legal landscape to stay knowledgeable about pertinent topics and to contextualize stories within the wider conversations.
  • Work closely with a remote team, filing punctual and clean copy and integrating editorial feedback.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience covering legal developments and court documents, particularly in politically charged cases.
  • Proficiency in professional journalism standards and best practices, including a record of reporting work involving multiple drafts, rigorous fact-checking, etc.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Salon’s voice and editorial mission
  • At least 3-5 years of professional journalism experience
  • A degree or equivalent newsroom training to match
