GSAN organizing rapidly
\r\n expanded into a national youth organizing movement that now works at the
\r\n intersection of racial and gender justice.
\r\n
\r\n In 2005, GSAN led the creation of the National Association of GSA Networks to
\r\n support the development of the growing national GSAN movement. Today, GSAN is
\r\n a network of 40 statewide organizations representing more than 4,000 GSAN
\r\n clubs across the country. In 2015, GSA Network transitioned its leadership to
\r\n a
\r\n Co-Executive Director model and made it an organizational priority to have
\r\n LGBTQ+ people of color in the top echelons of management and governance to
\r\n ensure that the organizational identity reflects the identity of the LGBTQ+
\r\n youth that participate in its programs.
\r\n
\r\n In 2016, GSAN formally changed its name to Genders & Sexualities Alliance
\r\n Network (formerly Gay-Straight Alliance Network) after hearing from countless
\r\n youth leaders who understand their genders and sexualities to be uniquely
\r\n theirs and have moved beyond the labels of gay and straight, and the limits
\r\n of a binary gender system. Trans and queer students continue to name their
\r\n individual school-based clubs in a way that reflects the values and identity
\r\n of its members.
\r\n
\r\n Today, GSA Network is guided by its vision of full equality and social
\r\n justice for all LGBTQ people. GSAN has developed a model of grassroots
\r\n organizing that trains youth activists to understand and challenge multiple
\r\n systems of oppressions and develops LGBTQ and allied leaders with a vision
\r\n for broad social justice. Grounded in this model, GSA Network builds the GSAN
\r\n movement by providing resources, training, and grassroots organizing support
\r\n to GSAN clubs working to educate schools about LGBTQIA+ issues and to change
\r\n public policy. As leader of the National Association of GSA Networks, GSAN
\r\n brings together youth and adult leaders from state and regional GSA Networks
\r\n to share best practices for GSAN organizing as they grow their team and
\r\n expand their impact nationally.
