Since its founding in 1876, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has actively collected and proudly displayed the art of its time. From those roots, the museum has developed one of the most prestigious, dynamic and enterprising collections of modern and contemporary art among this country’s encyclopedic art museums. The collection includes modern masterpieces as well as a remarkable range and vitality of contemporary works, including installation, painting, sculpture, video, and more. Both groundbreaking and challenging, visually inventive, and experientially engaging, the collection makes the museum a destination and serves as an invaluable resource for students, educators, and the many artists who’ve made Philadelphia their home.
