Primary Function: 

The Pre-K-12 Program Specialist develops engaging programs for PreK-12 students, delivered in Barnes’s galleries and in the classrooms of participating schools. The Specialist is part of the School Programs team, which provides in-person and online programming for PreK-12 students and teachers.

During the school year, this position facilitates tours in the Barnes galleries for students in PreK-12th grades.   The specialist also creates and teaches programs delivered to 5th grade classes at grant-funded school partners in Philadelphia.  These lessons integrate art with other content areas, such as science and math. The specialist develops and delivers professional development workshops for teachers and contributes to School Programs projects.

During the summer, the specialist contributes to community-based, out-of-school learning for students and families led by the Barnes’s Community Engagement and Family Programs team. The specialist also envisions, scripts, and films asynchronous, virtual learning videos for PreK-12 students on the Barnes’s Visual Experience Platform.

Staff time in this position is generally spent:

• 30% preparing and delivering Pre-K-12th tours of the Barnes collection galleries   
• 30% preparing and delivering 5th grade lessons in Philadelphia-area classrooms  
• 30% working on team projects and administrative activities, including scheduling in-school lessons with teachers  
• 10% scripting and filming virtual learning videos

Job Qualifications:

• Bachelors, plus 1 year of work experience; OR Associates/High School, plus 2 years of work experience in art education, a museum, informal learning setting, or classroom for the elementary, middle, or high school age range.
  Experience teaching hands-on studio art lessons.
  Outstanding organizational and written/verbal communications skills. 
  Ability to engage PreK-12 students of diverse ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds and developmental abilities in discussions about art.
  Teaching experience drawing from best practices in out-of-school or museum education including Universal Design for Learning, trauma-aware, anti-racist and anti-bias strategies.
  Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  Outstanding organizational and written/verbal communication skills.
  Ability to work accurately, with close attention to detail.
  Flexibility, creativity, dependability and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in/with the School District of Philadelphia or virtual learning settings
• Fluency in a language other than English (Spanish or another language frequently spoken by students in School District of Philadelphia is desirable; French is also desirable, as we are sometimes asked to give tours in French for high school French classes)
• Valid US-issued driver’s license with clean driving record

Physical Activities to Perform Essential Functions:

Moving:

• Approximately 50%+ of time is spent seated while working at a desk.  
• Ability to occasionally transport up to 25 lbs. of files, equipment or supplies. Ability to move to access files, equipment or supplies.
• Ability to travel to area schools two days per week during the school year and transport artmaking materials for in-school lessons.
• Ability to move and direct students through the galleries during 75-minute tours.

Vision Requirements:

• Communicate with others in conversational and written English. 

Working Conditions:

• Position operates in hybrid work setting comprised of the Barnes’ Philadelphia campus, Philadelphia-area schools, and (not more than two days per week) remote work setting indicated by the employee at their documented home address.
• Position requires extended time on the computer.

Job Responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver in-gallery lessons for students in PreK-12th grade, given training on the Barnes School Program’s pedagogy and teaching strategies, and using the Barnes’s collections and special exhibitions
• Write and deliver lessons that use the art objects in the Barnes collection to teach learning objectives in the PA state 5thgrade standards for science, math, and art
  • Coordinate scheduling and other logistics for the 5th grade partner program with teachers and administrators prior to and during visits to schools, with particular emphasis on sustaining partnerships with Philadelphia schools
  • Maintain attendance records, instructional plans, material inventories, program documentation, and work samples. Facilitate photos and videos of the program in action
  • Regular regional travel, transporting program materials to partner schools required via Barnes vehicle, personal vehicle, or public transportation
• Contribute to School Programs projects, such as the Art of Math Challenge, Teacher Advisory Board, Summer Educator Institute, and other professional development for teachers
• Envision, research, script, and film asynchronous, virtual learning videos for PreK-12 students on the Barnes’s Visual Experience Platform; develop web-based materials and other digital learning media
• In collaboration with the Community Engagement and Family Programs department, develop and deliver summer programs that address student learning retention and build connections between the Barnes, students of all ages, and their families
• Work occasionally at Free First Sunday events,
• Conduct independent research on artists and artworks in the Foundation’s collection and special exhibition galleries
• Create resources for teachers that help teachers bring the Barnes collection into their classrooms
• Perform other duties as assigned
