How You Will Contribute

The Coordinator for Art Speaks and Museum educator is part of a team of educators dedicated to making the museum a welcoming, accessible, age-appropriate, and exciting place to learn through a range of activities and opportunities designed for PreK – 12th grade students and their teachers. The Coordinator develops and leads a variety of experiences that help students engage with the Museum’s collections and make meaningful personal and academic connections with art including gallery, studio and virtual lessons. In addition to working with students, the coordinator supports classroom learning through professional development workshops for teachers and classroom teaching resources.

Specifically, you will:

Teach PreK-12 Gallery and In-school Lessons

• Develop and deliver engaging lessons for PreK -12th grade students centered around the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibits in person at the museum and at partnership schools as well as virtually. Projects and lessons include single visit lessons, multiple visit partnerships with select schools and the museum’s monthly Homeschool program as well as engaging with students participating in after-school programs.

• Coordinate partnerships and other school programs as needed.

• Develop Teacher Programs

• Collaborate with other School and Teacher Programs Educators to develop and lead PreK – 12th grade professional development workshops for teachers both at the PMA and in schools. These workshops occur during in school time, as well as some evenings and weekends and during the summer.

• Collaborate with other School and Teacher Programs Educators to develop teacher resources on the museum’s permanent collections and special exhibitions.

• Perform Other Activities

• Collaborate with staff across the Division of Education as well as other departments in the museum on projects and programs as needed.
  Engage with and lead projects with other education organizations as needed.
  Perform other duties as assigned.

Your background and experience include:

• BA or equivalent experiences in Museum Education, Art Education, Pre-K-12 classroom education, studio art or art history.

• Experience teaching a variety of grade levels of students in a museum, classroom or other arts organizations using object-based and inquiry- based teaching approaches.

• Experience teaching elementary and middle school students is especially desired.

• Experience developing Pre-K -12 curriculum in a museum or classroom setting is desirable.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability and openness to collaborating with others.

• Ability to keep several projects organized and running at the same time.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of people, including PreK-12 students and their teachers, homeschool parents, school administrators and many other Museum staff.

Position and Compensation Details

• The annual salary for this position is $48,000.

• This position is full time, exempt and 35 hours a week

• This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit

• This position reports to The Constance Williams Curator of Education, School & Teacher Programs.

• This position is a term position, beginning in fall 2023 and ending in September 2024.

Physical requirements:

• Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus

• Able to regularly set up, adjust, and operate a computer/keyboard and other office equipment used to generate work/transmit data.

• Able to move items up to 50 pounds

• Able to move through crowded public spaces easily for hours at a time to lead and teach student groups throughout the building

• COVID-19 vaccination required.

• Background check required after a conditional job offer is made.

• Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.

• PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting required.
