Salon helps you make sense of a contradictory world, leading the evolving, challenging dialogue on building a more democratic, innovative and humane future. A trusted digital destination for progressive journalism since 1995, we report on who’s being left behind and who’s getting ahead; we give current events context, provide rigorous analysis, and lead in-depth conversations; we engage and challenge our readers, dismantling conventional wisdom and celebrating innovation with humanity. We’re looking for a Deputy Breaking News Editor to add to our news team — someone deeply plugged into the news cycle who understands the characters, narratives, and essential information that our politics-savvy audience needs.

This is a full-time salaried position. Salon offers a full benefits package, including unlimited PTO. This position is covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement. While this is a remote job, this position is expected to be legally able to work in the U.S. and available to work a Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Eastern time schedule.

Responsibilities

This will be a hybrid role: assigning and editing daily news coverage on the fly, jumping in to write up a quick news post, and packaging content for a progressive audience.
Work with fledgling reporters to develop pitches and help guide them through reporting. This position will also be part of the daily newsletter editing team.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional journalism experience.
  • Excellent and fast editing, fact-checking and proofreading skills, including expertise in AP StyleStrong writing skills for a digital publication.
  • Strong track record of crafting highly clickable headlines.
  • Expert subject-level knowledge of current news and political trends, especially concerning the 2024 election, Congress, and various Trump-related legal proceedings. Expertise in professional journalism standards and best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team, including giving editorial direction and receiving and integrating critical feedback.
  • Proficiency in digital analytics tools such as Chartbeat.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent newsroom training)
