Director of Development & Communication
Position Title: Director of Development and Communications
Reports To: Executive Director
Department: Development and Communications
Status: Full-time, exempt, eligible for benefits
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required, master degree preferred, with significant
experience supervising a development staff and volunteers, initiating a
planning giving program, major donor development, directing fund raising
events, donor development and management (individual and corporate donors),
public relations, communication, grant writing, development of foundation
relationships, outreach and engaging of for profit corporations to support
and enhance service provided by Action Wellness. Position requires:
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
2. Superior supervisory skills, including ability to be a team leader,
setting concrete goals for staff as well as for the department.
3. Knowledge of donor management software and the ability to supervise the
production of data based reports that accurately capture trends and provide
information to guide goals and objectives of the department.
4. Record of accomplishment initiating planned giving and major donor
programs.
5. Ability to maintain strong working relationships with Directors, Managers,
Coordinators and line staff.
6. Sound judgement and ability to make decisions in line with the culture and
core values of the organization.
7. Proven management, supervisory and problem solving skills.
8. Demonstrated skills in managing department budget.
Basic Function: Work closely with the Executive Director to drive revenue
and strategic Communications, Public Relations, and Marketing in order to
identify, develop and secure business opportunities which will increase
financial stability, branding, visibility, and partnerships of Action
Wellness.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Manage the Business Development/Communication Department.
2. Develop and implement department plan, which will includes:
i. Annual Events Calendar
ii. Annual communications and development calendar
iii. Annual grants management calendar
iv. Major donor initiatives.
v. Planned giving initiatives.
3. Develop and implement public relations strategy with PR Consultant.
4. Implement planned giving program.
5. Supervise Development staff and volunteers supporting the departmental
functions.
i. Conduct weekly supervision meetings with each Development staff person,
delegate responsibilities as appropriate.
ii. Conduct monthly team meetings.
iii. Work with Development staff to develop procedural manuals, which include
event specific work plan, policies, procedures and general operating
procedures of the Development department.
6. Develop and implement social media strategy.
7. Ensure timely communication with other departments.
8. Adhere to established deadlines and time frames.
9. Develop and oversee Development Volunteers to assist Department with event
and special initiatives.
10. Manage all fund raising and resource development activities of the
organization.
11. Develop annual development and communication goals consistent with the
organization's budget and strategic plan.
12. Ability to speak on behalf of the organization and articulate the
organizations mission, vision and core values in public settings, including
media appearances and public events.
13. Provide direct support, when appropriate, for departmental functions and
activities.
14. Participate in Management Team meetings.
15. Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory and
registration requirements for departmental functions. Work with the Finance
Department to secure necessary insurance for special events.
16. Staff the Development Committee of the board.
17. Other duties as assigned.

procedures and expectations.
1. Meet departmental goals established with Executive Director annually.
2. Communicate effectively with relevant board committees, including data
and narrative reports.
3. Provide organizational leadership for functional area and communicate
effectively with all levels of staff.
4. Demonstrate resourcefulness and flexibility by fulfilling department's
essential functions and changing organizational needs with the resources
available.
5. Effectively anticipate, plan for and communicate future needs of the
department and the impact of these needs on the organization.
6. Demonstrate good judgment.
