We're looking for an organized, self-motivated and versatile news obsessive
to join our team as a full-time, remote writer/editor working nights and
weekends.

The ideal candidate will possess high editorial standards, strong news
judgment and an understanding of Salon’s audience, and will have the tools
and talents to keep our readers up to date on the most important news of the
day. In this role, you will be responsible for:

• Responding swiftly, independently and accurately to breaking news by
writing and publishing a mix of aggregated, original and syndicated stories
• Curating Salon’s homepage to showcase the depth and breadth of our
editorial coverage
• Writing, editing and scheduling the morning newsletter, Crash Course
• Closely monitoring analytics and making strategic decisions,
independently and in collaboration with the senior editorial team, to
optimize our readership
• Executing social promotion as needed

This is a full-time position with benefits (salary range: $70,000-80,000),
reporting to the Executive Editor and working Wednesday-Sunday with a
bicoastal editorial team. (Though hours will overlap with West Coast-based
team members during the week, weekends will be solo.) This is a remote
position, but you will be expected to work an agreed-upon schedule of weekday
late afternoon-evening (Eastern time) hours and Saturday and Sunday, and be
legally able to work in the U.S. This is a position covered under the Writers
Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Responsibilities include:

• Managing homepage curation, story scheduling and social promotion
• Writing, editing and publishing successful breaking news stories with
strong headlines and SEO
• Summarizing Salon stories from all verticals in Crash Course, the morning
newsletter
• Monitoring site analytics and responding in real time
• Coordinating extended coverage of breaking news with editorial team
• Editing additional copy as needed

Qualifications:

• 3+ years of professional experience in digital news
• Fluency in AP Style and ability to self-publish clean, factual copy with
confidence
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent newsroom training)
• Fluency in Chartbeat or other digital analytics tools
• Familiarity with CMS platforms and social media distribution
• Ability to work independently but also as part of a collegial, tight-knit
and mostly-remote team
