Part-Time NYC STEM Tutor

Off Da Beaten Path Learning LLC seeks a part-time in-person STEM Tutor to guide a learner through our self-directed education model, where students choose what, how, and when they learn. Success is measured by learner confidence, creativity, and independence. 88% of learners achieve their self-defined goals. 64% identify as neurodivergent and/or disabled.

Key Responsibilities

Support and coach one learner through curiosity-driven, individualized sessions. He is preparing for his GED and is currently at a 5th grade level in math and science. Prepare based on learner’s goals, strengths, and needs. Encourage accountability and growth. Collaborate with families and team members.

Details

• In-person, 3–5 hrs/week (includes preparation and meetings).
• Location will vary (coffee shops, libraries, museums, the park, etc).
• Weekly schedule: ~2 hrs prep, 2 hrs learner meetings.
• Paid onboarding and training.
• $640/month, fixed on a monthly basis.

Qualifications

• 7–10+ years experience as a tutor, coach, or mentor.
• Strong secondary-level science and math knowledge.
• Respect for learner autonomy; creative, curious, adaptable, and reliable.
• Excellent communication skills. Professional.

Preferred

• Creative, fun, and innovative educator.
• Skilled at using hands-on materials to teach math and science.
• Familiarity with self-directed education, unschooling, or alternative learning models.
• Experience in community or alternative settings (after-school, camps, vocational, continuing ed).
• Comfortable with video conferencing (Zoom, Google Meet) when needed
• Preferred schedule & location: Early afternoons, in person near West 4th Street, Lower Manhattan
