Staff Writer, News & Politics
Salon is hiring a full-time staff writer to join our editorial team. We’re looking for a writer with experience covering different aspects of U.S. politics. Preference will be given to writers with expertise and understanding of the issues and personalities emerging on the American right — from “moderate” Republicans and pro-Trump elected officials to unhinged media voices on the extremist fringe.
The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment and the ability to see both the big picture and the small yet significant details, and how they fit together. Salon is a home for unique voices, and we’re looking for a writer who can combine hard news and feature writing skills to craft compelling narratives that go beyond the surface to offer context and nuance for an invested, politically astute digital audience.
Preference will be given to candidates with daily writing experience and a demonstrated ability to enterprise a beat, with a proven ability to work simultaneously on shorter daily news stories, including pitching in on quick breaking news, and larger reported and/or investigative projects.
This is a full-time position with benefits. This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Remote workers are welcome, but you will be expected to work an agreed-upon schedule oriented around the Eastern time zone, and be legally able to work in the U.S.
Salon covers national news and politics, culture and entertainment, food, and science and health through insightful reporting, our flagship show “Salon Talks” and other Salon TV programming, commentary and analysis, criticism, investigations, original newsletters and personal essays. Founded in San Francisco in 1995, Salon is a digital pioneer; our entrepreneurial culture honors the spirit of our founders by rewarding innovation and initiative.
Our writers and editors are highly organized, detail- and deadline-oriented professionals who know how to collaborate and communicate effectively using digital tools. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of news writing experience in digital media and formal journalism training (classroom, newsroom or a combination of both), with SEO knowledge, AP Style fluency and familiarity with a WordPress-based CMS.
Candidates who progress to the final interview stage will be expected to take an edit test, for which they will be compensated.
